1819-1877 French Gustave Courbet Locations was a French painter whose powerful pictures of peasants and scenes of everyday life established him as the leading figure of the realist movement of the mid-19th century. Gustave Courbet was born at Ornans on June 10, 1819. He appears to have inherited his vigorous temperament from his father, a landowner and prominent personality in the Franche-Comte region. At the age of 18 Gustave went to the College Royal at Besancon. There he openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the traditional classical subjects he was obliged to study, going so far as to lead a revolt among the students. In 1838 he was enrolled as an externe and could simultaneously attend the classes of Charles Flajoulot, director of the ecole des Beaux-Arts. At the college in Besançon, Courbet became fast friends with Max Buchon, whose Essais Poetiques (1839) he illustrated with four lithographs. In 1840 Courbet went to Paris to study law, but he decided to become a painter and spent much time copying in the Louvre. In 1844 his Self-Portrait with Black Dog was exhibited at the Salon. The following year he submitted five pictures; only one, Le Guitarrero, was accepted. Maurice Brazil Prendergast
(October 10, 1858 - February 1, 1924) was a U.S. Post-Impressionist artist who worked in oil, watercolor, and monotype. Technically, he was a member of The Eight, but the delicacy of his compositions and mosaic-like beauty of his designs had little in common with the philosophy of the group. Prendergast was born in St. John's, a city in Newfoundland, Canada. With the failure of his father's subarctic trading post, the family moved to Boston.

1812-1846 Per Gabriel Wickenberg, född 1 oktober 1812 i Malmö, död 19 december 1846 i Pau, var en svensk konstnär. Per Wickenberg kom från enkla förhållanden, hans far var fanjunkare, men visade tidigt en talang för teckning och måleri. 1831 skedde en insamling till hans förmån i Malmö, mend vars hjälp han fick möjlighet att komma till Stockholm att studera konst. Han besvärades tidigt av en ögonsjukdom, och med hjälp av bidrag från Konstföreningen i Stockholm fick han 1836 hjälp att resa till Tyskland för att söka bot. Efter tillfrisknandet valde han att stanna en tid i Berlin och vann där ett gott erkännande för sina tavlor. 1838 reste han till Paris, och vann där samma år guldmedalj på salongen för sin tavla "Nordiskt vinterlandskap". Wickenberg blev 1839 agre och 1842 ledamot av Konstakademien, under det att han stannade kvar i Paris. Wickenbergs ögonsjukdom återkom dock, och han insjuknade även i tuberkulos. Vintern 1843-44 uppehöll han sig i Nice, för att kurera sig, men förgåves, och 1846 avled han, bara 34 år gammal. 1842 tilldelades han Vasaorden och Hederslegionens kors.

1844-1930 After training with a provincial icon painter and at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, he visited France and Italy on an academy scholarship. On his return he began painting subjects from Russian history. In 1873 he achieved international fame with Volga Boatmen, a grim, powerful image that became the model for Soviet Socialist Realism. Among his best-known works is Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan (1895), depicting Ivan's murder of his son. He also painted vigorous portraits (including Leo Tolstoy and Modest Mussorgsky). In 1894 he became professor of historical painting at the St. Petersburg Academy.
